Dehydroacetic acid is a white or off-white crystalline powder, odorless with a slightly distinctive flavor. Its melting point is 109-110°C. It is freely soluble in water (1g/3ml), propylene glycol (1g/2ml), and glycerol (1g/7ml). It is slightly soluble in ethanol (1%) and aceton (0.2%). It exhibits good light and heat resistance. Its aqueous solution remains stable when heated at 120°C for 2 hours. Its aqueous solution is neutral or slightly alkaline.

Dehydroacetic acid is used as an intermediate in organic synthesis; in the paste of resin emulsions such as vinyl acetate emulsion and acrylic acid vinyl emulsion, and in the paste of mixtures such as polyvinyl alcohol, carboxymethyl cellulose, starch, and bone glue; recently it has been more widely used in adhesives, mosquito coils, feed, shampoo, toothpaste and other fields; because this product has an inhibitory effect on mold, yeast and Gram-negative bacteria, it is used as a mildew inhibitor and preservative in medicine, cosmetics and food.
