Astragalus membranaceus, a plant of the genus Astragalus in the Fabaceae family, is also known as Northeast Astragalus, cotton Astragalus, membranous astragalus, etc. It is a perennial herb, reaching a height of 50 to 100 centimeters. The main root is thick and grayish-white. The stem is upright, with many branches at the upper part, having fine ridges and covered with white soft hairs. The pinnate compound leaves have 13 to 27 leaflets, with petioles 0.5 to 1 centimeter long. The stipules are isolated, lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, and are covered with white soft hairs or nearly hairless underneath. The raceme is slightly denser, with 10 to 20 flowers. The pedicels are nearly the same length as the leaves or relatively long, and significantly elongate by the fruiting stage. The corolla is yellow or pale yellow, and the petals are oblong. The capsule is membranous, slightly swollen, semi-elliptical, and has a spiny tip at the top. The flowering period is from June to August and the fruiting period is from July to September.

Astragalus membranaceus is mainly distributed in China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and other countries worldwide. It is widely cultivated in various parts of China, mainly distributed in the Tibet Autonomous Region, Sichuan Province, Gansu Province, Shandong Province, Shaanxi Province and other places. It grows at the edge of forests, in thickets or under sparse forests, and is also found on slopes and beside gullies at an altitude of 2,500 to 4,000 meters. Astragalus membranaceus prefers a cool and sunny environment. Cold-resistant but heat-sensitive, drought-resistant but intolerant of waterlogging.
