Valve Actuation: The primary function of the rocker lever is to convert the rotational motion of the camshaft into linear motion to open and close the engine's intake and exhaust valves. As the camshaft rotates, it pushes against the rocker lever, causing it to pivot or oscillate. This, in turn, pushes down on the valve stem or pushrod, causing the valve to open or close as needed.

Valve Timing and Lift: The design and placement of the rocker lever are critical for determining the timing and lift of the valves. By changing the shape and dimensions of the rocker lever, engine designers can control when and how far the valves open and close, which has a direct impact on the engine's performance and efficiency.

Valve Clearance Adjustment: In many engines, especially older models, the rocker lever can be adjusted to set the valve clearance. Proper valve clearance is essential for maintaining optimal engine performance and minimizing valve train noise. Valve clearance adjustments are typically performed during routine maintenance.

Transfer of Motion: The rocker lever transfers the motion from the camshaft to the valve with a mechanical advantage, allowing the engine to open and close the valves with precision and control. It ensures that the valves are actuated in synchronization with the engine's piston movements.

Noise Reduction: Properly designed and maintained rocker levers can help reduce valvetrain noise and vibration.
