High Light | special shaped taper key ,flat taper key ,flat tangential key |
Keys are common mechanical components used to achieve circumferential fixation between a shaft and components mounted on it (e.g., gears, pulleys, couplings) for transmitting torque and rotational motion. Some keys can also provide axial fixation or transmit axial forces. They are primarily divided into two categories: Flat Keys and Special-Shaped Keys.
Flat Keys: Have a rectangular cross-section. Their two side surfaces are the working faces, transmitting torque through compression against the keyway sides. They offer good centering and are easy to assemble/disassemble. Divided into types based on head shape.
Special-Shaped Keys: Have a non-rectangular cross-section with a special shape to adapt to different functional requirements, such as transmitting higher torque, self-centering, or ease of assembly.
Type | Introduction & Advantages | Applications |
---|---|---|
Type A Flat Key (Round Ends) |
Intro: Ends are semicircular. Adv: Keyways machined with an end mill, resulting in lower stress concentration. Disadv: Axial fixation of the key in the keyway is poor. | Commonly used at shaft ends or mid-sections, widely applied. |
Type B Flat Key (Square Ends) |
Intro: Ends are square. Adv: Keyways machined with a disk cutter, good axial fixation. Disadv: Higher stress concentration at the ends of the keyway. | Often used in the middle section of a shaft. |
Type C Flat Key (One Round End) |
Intro: One end is semicircular, one end is square. Adv: Combines features of A and B types, mainly for shaft ends. | Particularly suitable for shaft ends, e.g., tapered shaft ends. |
Feather Key | Intro: A long flat key fixed in the shaft keyway with screws. Adv: The mounted component can slide axially along the key (e.g., sliding gears in gearboxes). | Used for axially moving transmission parts, e.g., gearboxes. |
Woodruff Key | Intro: (Special-Shaped) Semicircular shape, sides are working faces. Adv: 1. Self-Aligning: Can swivel in its keyway to adapt to the taper of the hub keyway. 2. Easy installation. Disadv: Significantly reduces shaft strength. | Suitable for light loads, conical shaft ends, or where shaft diameter changes. Common in automobiles and machine tools. |
Taper Key | Intro: (Special-Shaped) The top surface and the hub keyway bottom have a 1:100 taper. Adv: Transmits torque and uniaxial axial force via friction between the top and bottom surfaces. Disadv: Poor centering. | Used for applications with low centering requirements and low-speed heavy loads, e.g., agricultural machinery. |
Tangential Key | Intro: (Special-Shaped) Consists of a pair of tapered keys (1:100). Adv: Working faces are the top and bottom surfaces, capable of transmitting very high torque. Disadv: Severely reduces shaft strength; poor centering. | Used for heavy-duty, low-speed drives, e.g., large pulleys, mining machinery. |
Spline | Intro: (Special-Shaped) Multiple evenly distributed key teeth are milled directly onto the shaft and into the hub bore. Adv: 1. Extremely High Load Capacity: Multiple teeth share the load uniformly. 2. Excellent Centering & Guidance. 3. Minimal Reduction in Shaft Strength. Disadv: High manufacturing cost. | Used for applications requiring high precision and high load transmission, e.g., automotive transmissions, aircraft engines, machine tools. |
Dimensions: Key width (b), key height (h), key length (L). Conform to national standards (e.g., GB/T 1095, 1096, 1097, 1098, 1099 in China) or international standards (e.g., ISO 6883).
Fit Tolerances: The fit tolerance between the key and the shaft keyway/hub keyway is critical, determining the tightness of the connection and centering. Typically, the shaft keyway is tight, and the hub keyway is loose.
Material: Usually made from carbon steel with a tensile strength of not less than 600 MPa, such as Grade 45 steel. Alloy steel may be used for heavy loads.
Surface Hardness: Working surfaces are often hardened (quenched) to improve wear resistance and resistance to crushing.
General transmission, high centering requirement: Preferred choice is Flat Key.
Tapered shaft end or light load: Consider a Woodruff Key.
Axial movement: Use a Feather Key.
Low centering requirement, low-speed heavy load: Consider a Taper Key.
Very heavy loads, high centering requirement: Must use a Spline.
