5000 Series 5182 Aluminum Alloy Coil For Pop Can Pull Tab
5182 dominates pull-tab production due to its optimal balance of strength, formability, and
corrosion resistance, with specifications fine-tuned for high-speed production.
Typical Thickness
Range: 0.25 mm – 0.32 mm
This thickness is optimized to balance strength (for pulling) and formability
In some high-performance beverage cans (e.g., energy drinks), the thickness may reach up
to 0.33 mm depending on the design.
Typical Temper
H19:
This is a fully strain-hardened temper.
Offers maximum strength without further heat treatment.
Ideal for stamped parts like pull tabs where shape retention and springback resistance are critical.
Performance Advantages

5182 has significantly higher strength than the aluminum used in the can body (like 3004 or 3104),
which is essential for withstanding the force when the tab is pulled.
♦ Excellent formability
It can be efficiently stamped and formed into the stay-tab shape using high-speed equipment.
♦ Good corrosion resistance
As a magnesium-containing alloy (Al-Mg series), 5182 forms a natural protective oxide layer,
making it highly resistant to corrosion.
♦ Lightweight and recyclable
Like all can components, pull tabs must be lightweight and easily recyclable, and 5182 meets
both criteria.
