PRECIPITATION-HARDENING (PH) STAINLESS STEELS

There are two general areas of PH grade stainless steels: martensitic and semi-austenitic.

The martensitic group includes 17-4PH Stainless Steel and 15-5PH Stainless Steel chromium nickel
(CrNi), with niobium (Nb) and copper additions.

They develop their high strength and hardness through heat treatment, which precipitates the copper.

The martensitic PH steels are used in aerospace, chemical and petrochemical, and food processing applications.
The semi-austenitic grades are 17-7PH Stainless Steel and PH 15-7Mo Stainless Steel.

They are austenitic in the annealed state, but martensitic in the hardened condition.

17-7PH Stainless Steel has excellent high strength and fatigue properties, and is used in aerospace components.
PH 15-7Mo Stainless Steel is used in applications requiring high strength and hardness, such as retaining rings,

springs, and aircraft bulkheads.

Grade Characteristics

17-4PH

UNS S17400

AISI 630

EN 1.4542

DIN X5CrNiCuNb16-4

SUS630

17-4PH precipitation hardening stainless steel (S17400), is a chromium-nickel-copper precipitation hardening stainless steel used for applications requiring high strength and a moderate level of corrosion resistance. High strength is maintained to approximately 600°F (316°C). This alloy is designated Grade or Type 630 in several specifications.

The S17400 alloy is martensitic in structure in the annealed condition and is further strengthened by a low temperature treatment which precipitates a copper containing phase in the alloy. In comparison to many alloys in the precipitation hardening family, the S17400 alloy requires a simple heat treatment; a one step process conducted at a temperature in the range 900°F (482°C) to 1150°F (621°C) depending on the combination of strength and toughness desired. A wide range of properties can be produced by this one step heat treatment. Heat treatment in the 900°F (482°C) range produces highest strength.

17-4PH stainless steel in sheet, strip, and plate product forms. 17-4PH stainless steel is produced in compliance with aerospace specifications such as AMS 5604 and standard industrial specifications such as ASTM A693 and ASME SA-693.

17-7PH

UNS S17700

AISI 631

EN 1.4568

DIN X7CrNiAl17-7

SUS631

17-7PH Precipitation Hardening Alloy (S17700) is a chromium-nickel-aluminum precipitation hardening stainless steel used for applications requiring high strength and a moderate level of corrosion resistance.

The S17700 alloy has been available for many years and has found application in aerospace and many spring type applications requiring high strength.

17-7PH precipitation hardening alloy may be formed in a soft austenitic condition and hardened to a high strength level by low temperature heat treatments.

The low temperature allows minimum distortion compared to conventional quench and temper hardening processes. In addition to material produced by the standard refining procedures, material which has been vacuum arc or electroslag remelted is available for further increase in resistance to fatigue,

for those applications subject to cyclic stresses.

PH15-7Mo

UNS S15700

AISI 632

EN 1.4574

DIN X7CrNiMoAl15-7

PH15-7Mo Precipitation Hardening Alloy (S15700, AISI Type 632) is a chromium-nickel-molybdenum-aluminum semi-austenitic precipitation hardening stainless steel used for applications requiring high strength and a moderate level of corrosion resistance.

The S15700 alloy is similar to 17-7PH Precipitation Hardening Alloy (S17700). The S15700 alloy is designed with substitution of approximately 2.0 percent molybdenum for 2.0 percent chromium in the S17700 alloy. This results in somewhat higher room and elevated temperature strength for the S15700 alloy. The S15700 alloy has been available for a number of years and has found application in aerospace and many spring type applications requiring high strength.

PH15-7Mo precipitation hardening alloy may be formed in a soft austenitic condition and hardened to a high strength level by low temperature heat treatments. The low temperature heat treatment required for developing high strength allows minimum distortion compared to conventional quench and temper hardening processes.

In addition to material produced by the standard refining procedures, material which has been vacuum arc or electroslag re-melted is available for further increase in resistance to fatigue, for those applications subject to cyclic stresses.

15-5PH

UNS S15500

AISI XM-12

EN 1.4545

DIN X5CrNiCu15-5

15-5PH precipitation hardening stainless steel (S15500) is a variant of the older 17-4PH (S17400) chromium-nickel-copper precipitation hardening stainless steel.

Both alloys exhibit high strength and moderate corrosion resistance.

High strength is maintained to approximately 600°F (316°C).

This alloy is designated Grade or Type XM-12 in several specifications.

15-5 stainless alloy was designed to have greater toughness than S17400, especially in the through-thickness (short transverse) direction. This improved toughness is achieved by reduced delta ferrite content and control of inclusion size and shape.

The composition and processing of 15-5PH alloy is carefully controlled to minimize its content of delta ferrite, which is present in the S17400 material. Inclusion control is done by consumable electrode remelting using the electro-slag remelting (ESR) process.

The S15500 alloy is martensitic in structure in the annealed condition and is further strengthened by a relatively low temperature heat treatment, which precipitates a copper containing phase in the alloy. Like the S17400 alloy, the S15500 alloy requires only a simple heat treatment; a one-step process conducted at a temperature in the range 900°F (482°C) to 1150°F (621°C) depending on the combination of strength and toughness desired.

A wide range of properties can be produced by this one-step heat treatment. Heat treatment in the 900°F (482°C) range produces the highest strength, although it is slightly less than those of semi-austenitic alloys like S17700 or S15700. The latter precipitation hardening stainless steels generally require more steps to complete heat treatment. 15-5PH alloy is generally better suited for plate applications than are the semiaustenitic alloys.

PH13-8Mo

S13800

AISI XM-13

EN 1.4534

DIN X3CrNiMoAl13-8-2

PH13-8Mo (UNS S13800) is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel that has excellent strength, high hardness, superior toughness, and good corrosion resistance. Good transverse toughness properties are achieved by tight chemical composition control, low carbon content, and vacuum melting.

Typical applications are large airframe structural components, injection molding equipment and slide gates to control water flow.

The S13800 alloy is martensitic in structure in the solution annealed condition and is further strengthened by a relatively low temperature heat treatment, which precipitates a strengthening phase in the alloy. Like the S17400 alloy, the S13800 alloy requires only a simple heat treatment, a one step process conducted at a temperature in the range 950°F (510°C) to 1150°F (620°C) depending on the combination of strength and toughness desired. A wide range of properties can be produced by this one step heat treatment. Heat treatment at about 950°F (510°C) produces the highest strength.
