At present, the total production of steel pipe in the world has more than 110 countries more than 1850 companies under more than 5100 production plants, including the production of oil pipe in 44 countries more than 170 companies under more than 260 plants. In 2000, the national apparent consumption of seamless steel pipe was 4.180 million tons, of which domestic supply was 3.821 million tons, accounting for 91.4% of the total domestic demand. Imports amounted to 359,000 tons, accounting for 8.59 percent of the total domestic demand. About 910,000 tons of oil pipe were consumed in the same year. About 252,000 tons were imported. The import pipe accounts for about 70% of the total domestic consumption, of which the import pipe accounts for 27.69% of the total domestic consumption, and the import of petroleum pipe accounts for about 70% of the total import of seamless steel pipe. Imports from Japan account for more than half of the total. Tianjin Steel Pipe Company, the largest oil casing production base in China, produced 520,000 tons of steel pipe in 2000, among which 364,100 tons of oil casing was produced. Casing accounts for more than half of the nation's oil production. In terms of output and sales volume, it has occupied the first place in China's casing market.
From the international and domestic two markets, seamless steel pipe (including petroleum pipe) existing production capacity has been greater than the demand. Therefore, the focus in the future should be on giving full play to the capacity of existing units, and developing high strength grade, high damage resistance, high corrosion resistance of oil pipe, high pressure boiler tube and gas cylinder tube products. It is also the content of China's current steel market to optimize the product structure. This is also the key to increase the competitiveness of products at home and abroad and expand market share. That is to say, improving the market competitiveness of domestic steel pipe enterprises is the long-term task and the key to successful development of domestic enterprises after joining WTO.
