The O-ring may be used in static appliions or in dynamic appliions where there is relative motion between the parts and the O-ring. Dynamic examples include rotating pump shafts and hydraulic cylinder pistons.

FKM O-rings have low gas permeability and O-rings (FKM O-rings) are commonly used as gaskets in fuel system sealing appliions. Other fluorocarbon compounds can also offer improved resistance to acids, fuels, water, and steam.
