Because low temperature fast charging can damage the battery, do not use fast charging when charging lithium-ion batteries in winter.
When charging, lithium ions swim from the positive electrode to the negative electrode. Lithium ion batteries are also known as rocking chair batteries, which means that lithium ions continuously ionize between the positive and negative electrodes. During charging, lithium ions migrate through the separator from the positive electrode to the negative electrode. When fast charging is needed, a large amount of lithium ions need to be returned to the negative graphite in a short period of time. The surface area of graphite is limited, and it is impossible to receive so many lithium ions at once. At this time, it will inevitably cause lithium ion crowding. If there is too much crowding, some lithium ions will be lost and cannot return to the negative electrode. This loss rate is closely related to temperature and charging speed.
The lost lithium ions will no longer participate in the charging and discharging of the battery in the future. They are still near the negative electrode of the battery, but they have changed from lithium ions to lithium metal, becoming silver white metallic lithium attached to the surface of the negative electrode. This phenomenon is called "lithium deposition" in the industry.
If charging continues at low temperatures or with high current, lithium metal will begin to crystallize, forming fork like crystals. Over time, these branches grew larger and eventually punctured the battery separator, causing the battery to short-circuit and catch fire.
