A pellet mill die, also referred to as the pellet mill ring die or stationary die, is an indispensable part of a pellet mill. It is of vital significance in the pellet production process. This die is a fixed, cylindrical metal ring that is placed inside the pellet mill, encircling the rotating roller shells.
It has several key functions. Firstly, in terms of shaping and compaction, when the feed material enters the pellet mill, the rotating roller shells push it through the tiny openings in the die. This action not only molds the feed material into the desired pellet form but also compresses it to the necessary density. Secondly, the extrusion function is crucial. The feed material is pushed out through the die holes, which gives the pellets their cylindrical shape and determines their size. The size and arrangement of the die holes directly affect the final dimensions of the produced pellets.
Moreover, heat generation occurs during the process. As the feed material passes through the die, friction and mechanical work produce heat. This heat helps to gelatinize starches and binders, creating a more cohesive pellet structure. Finally, considering wear resistance, the pellet mill die endures substantial abrasive wear because of the continuous friction and pressure from the feed material. Usually, it is made from wear-resistant materials like high - chrome cast iron or specialized alloys. These materials enable the die to withstand the harsh working conditions and keep its shape and dimensional accuracy intact.
