The Challenges Faced by Muzhailing Tunnel

The construction of the Muzhailing Tunnel presented unique challenges due to its location in the boundary zone of multiple geological tectonic plates. The tunnel site area experienced high ground stress and significant deformation of soft rock, with a maximum burial depth of 629.1 meters. This resulted in notable deformation of the surrounding rock, posing a challenge for traditional construction techniques.

Overcoming Traditional Limitations

Traditional support methods struggled to address the continuous deformation of the surrounding rock during the initial construction phase. At that time, the maximum deformation reached 2125 millimeters, leading to an alarming arch replacement rate of 33%. It was evident that new approaches were needed to tackle these pressing issues.

Innovative Solutions for Improved Efficiency

To address the deformation challenges, a mechanized construction approach was adopted. The Keda intelligent multi strand anchor cable installation trolley was introduced, featuring a traction mechanism and cable feeding device. This innovation facilitated the continuous and suspended delivery of anchor cables, reducing ground friction resistance and significantly enhancing installation efficiency.

By implementing constant resistance anchor cable technology, such as NPR anchor cables, in conjunction with the coordinated operation of the main arm and auxiliary arm, the deformation of the surrounding rock was effectively controlled to within 300 millimeters. As a result, the arch replacement rate was reduced to zero, marking a substantial improvement in construction outcomes.

Secondly, the adoption of fully mechanized construction methods for large deformation tunnels in soft rock contexts has revolutionized conventional manual construction approaches.

This transformation has yielded substantial benefits, including enhanced construction quality and accelerated project timelines. Specifically, the mechanized approach has reduced the need for initial support construction personnel by 20%, shortened individual support construction cycles by nearly 2 hours, and minimized tunnel convergence values by up to 48.6%. These advancements mark a significant step forward in addressing the challenges of constructing tunnels in soft rock formations.
