Does polycarbonate turn yellow?

  • Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light: Prolonged exposure to sunlight or strong artificial UV light can cause the polymer chains in polycarbonate to break down and undergo chemical changes, leading to yellowing. This is a common issue when polycarbonate is used in outdoor applications without proper UV protection.
  • Thermal degradation: When polycarbonate is subjected to high temperatures for an extended period, it can undergo thermal degradation. This can occur during processing or in applications where the material is exposed to heat sources. Thermal degradation can cause the formation of chromophores, which are responsible for the yellow color.
  • Oxidation: Contact with oxygen and other oxidizing agents can cause oxidation of the polycarbonate material. Oxidation reactions can lead to the formation of yellow - colored degradation products. Factors such as high humidity and the presence of certain chemicals can accelerate the oxidation process.
  • Residual stress: Internal stresses within the polycarbonate material, which may be introduced during manufacturing or processing, can affect its stability. Over time, these stresses can cause the material to degrade and yellow.
 
However, it's important to note that not all polycarbonate will turn yellow. Many polycarbonate products are formulated with additives such as UV stabilizers, antioxidants, and heat stabilizers to improve their resistance to yellowing. These additives can significantly extend the lifespan and color stability of polycarbonate in various applications.

5. How to identify the UV side of the sheet?
A: The UV side is the side protected with the printed masking film. To avoid installing the sheet at the wrong side which will void the warranty, please ensure only to remove the masking film after the sheet has been installed.

6. How do I know that a twin wall polypropylene sheet has UV layer?
A: You can’t see the UV layer with the naked eyes. A laboratory test is required to prove this. Some international labs have this facility. Usually UV side layer will more thicker than the down side.
