Positioners play a crucial role in ensuring a pre-defined correlation between the input signal and the valve position. In other words, they facilitate the assignment of the controlled variable x to the reference variable w. This is achieved by comparing the input signal generated by the control system with the movement of the control valve.
The positioner then issues an output signal pressure pst, which corresponds to the movement of the valve. If the control system input and valve movement don't match up, the positioner will adjust the signal pressure until the desired valve position is achieved.
If the actuator is double-acting, the positioner will also make use of a reversing amplifier to generate two opposing signal pressures. This ensures that the valve can be moved both inwards and outwards.
The product has a range of mounting positions to suit different requirements and can be used for normal or split-range operations. It has an excellent dynamic response and minimal influence of supply air. The proportional band (P band) is adjustable, and the air output capacity can be adjusted to meet specific needs. For those who require flameproof protection, the product is available with type of protection Ex d, which includes the Type 3766 Positioner and the Type 6116 i/p Converter as shown in Figure 2.
The product can be directly attached to the Type 3277 Actuator, as illustrated in Figure 3, or it can be attached to actuators in accordance with IEC 60534-6. For those using rotary actuators, attachment is possible according to VDI/VDE 3845.
