Xanthohumol is a prenylated chalcone flavonoid compound extracted from hops, the only known natural source of xanthohumol. Its chemical structure can be derivatized to form active substances such as tetrahydroxanthohumol. Experimental studies have demonstrated multiple biological activities, including regulating lipid metabolism, inhibiting cancer cell proliferation, and slowing the progression of neurodegenerative diseases. Data from a 2023 publication in the journal Microbiome showed that its derivatives reduced low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels by 80%, insulin levels by 42%, and the inflammatory marker interleukin-6 by 78% in experimental animals.
1.Regulating Metabolic Function
Research has found that tetrahydroxanthohumol, by remodeling the gut microbiome, reduced levels of the inflammatory factor IL-6 in model animals by 78%.
2.Anti-Cancer Mechanism
Xanthohumol has a dual anti-cancer mechanism: on the one hand, it inhibits the activity of carcinogenic enzymes such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and on the other hand, it directly eliminates carcinogenic metabolites such as benzopyrene. In vitro experiments showed that it inhibited the proliferation of the breast cancer cell line MCF-7 by 65% (treatment with a 10μM concentration for 72 hours).
3.Neuroprotective Effects
Xanthohumol enhanced the phagocytic capacity of microglia and reduced the deposition of amyloid-β plaques by 42%. Subsequent studies confirmed that this compound, by activating the Nrf2 pathway, increased the ability of neurons to resist oxidative damage by 2.3%.
