Rail anchors are made of spring steel and are a one-piece construction used to securely hold rails to the track base to prevent longitudinal track movement, i.e. track "creep" caused by temperature changes, grade, traffic patterns and train braking action.
Rail anchors are mounted directly to the track base and rest against the sleepers. Rail anchors provide a large bearing surface for the track base and railroad sleepers, preventing cuts and wear, ultimately extending the service life of the railroad sleepers. Anchors are manufactured to specific rail weights and base widths and can be divided into two types: driven rail anchors and spring-loaded rail anchors.

The rail anchor should be located on the gauge side of the rail base, against the same sleeper face on the opposite track.
The rail anchor must grip the rail base tightly and rest completely against the sleeper face.
When the support of the rail anchor on the sleeper is disturbed, a new rail anchor and sleeper will be required.
The anchor must not be moved by driving along the track.
The sleeper should be kept straight when the anchor is used.
