ASTM B111 is a standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials, known as the "Standard Specification for Copper and Copper Aluminum Seamless Condenser Tubes and Ferrule Stock". It specifically specifies the chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensional tolerances, process requirements, inspection methods, etc. of seamless copper and copper alloy tubes used for condensers, heat exchangers, and similar heat exchange equipment. C71500 is a specific copper alloy gold number (UNS number), representing a 70/30 copper nickel alloy, which nominally contains 70% copper and 30% nickel.
Excellent corrosion resistance: Excellent corrosion resistance is the most prominent advantage of C71500 copper nickel heat exchange tubes. It has strong resistance to various chemical solutions such as seawater, brackish water, steam condensate, and non oxidizing acids, salts, and alkalis. At the same time, the C71500 copper nickel heat exchange tube has excellent resistance to erosion corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, and dealloying corrosion (such as nickel removal), and is very durable in flowing seawater. It is widely used in marine environmental applications such as ships, seawater desalination plants, and coastal power stations. On the other hand, the resistance to biofouling of C71500 copper nickel heat exchange tubes is superior to some other copper alloys.
Good mechanical performance: ASTM B111 C71500 copper nickel heat exchange tubes have higher strength and hardness than pure copper and many other copper alloys. At the same time, with good ductility and toughness, ASTM B111 C71500 copper nickel heat exchange tubes are easier to perform cold working and other hot forming processes such as bending and expanding. In addition, ASTM B111 C71500 copper nickel heat exchange tubes have good creep resistance.
Excellent thermal conductivity: Although the thermal conductivity of ASTM B111 C71500 copper nickel heat exchange tubes is lower than that of pure copper or brass, C71500 heat exchange tubes still have significant advantages over materials such as stainless steel, about 5-10 times that of austenitic stainless steel, making them very suitable for condensers and heat exchangers that require efficient heat transfer.
Machinability and Weldability: The machinability of ASTM B111 C71500 copper nickel heat exchange tubes is inferior to that of pure copper and aluminum brass, but superior to heat exchange tubes made of high silicon bronze and other materials; ASTM B111 C71500 copper nickel heat exchange tubes have good welding performance and can be welded using conventional welding methods such as tungsten inert gas welding, metal inert gas welding, and electrode arc welding. Usually, heat treatment is not required after welding.
Cold resistance: ASTM B111 C71500 copper nickel heat exchange tubes can maintain good toughness and strength at low temperatures.
ASTM B111 C71500 belongs to copper-nickel alloy (Cu-Ni), commonly known as 70-30 white copper. Its core components are copper, iron, nickel and manganese. Copper can provide basic electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance for C71500 tubes, while nickel is one of the most critical elements in the chemical composition of C71500, which significantly improves the strength and seawater corrosion resistance of the pipe, stabilizes the structure, and improves the erosion corrosion resistance and stress corrosion cracking resistance. Iron can form a protective oxide film with nickel, improve the stability of C71500 tubes in high-speed flowing seawater, and enhance the tube's resistance to seawater erosion corrosion (cavitation); manganese, as a deoxidizer, can improve the hot working performance of the tube, and the small amount of solid solution strengthening it brings can also improve the corrosion resistance of the tube.
