Grounded vs surge protection
· Functionality: Grounding ensures safety during faults whereas Surge protects gears against instantaneous voltage spikes damaging them;
· Focus Points: Ground focuses fault currents/electrical security while Surging concentrates on fluctuating voltages/device protections;
· Complementary Relations: Both Ground/Surge Protections usually work together; former ensures any surges/fault currents safely discharged latter prevents surged voltages reaching sensitive gears;
Is overload protection the same as surge protection?
Overload protection primarily focuses on preventing overheating and fires caused by excessive current flow. Surge protection, on the other hand, safeguards against voltage spikes that can damage electronic equipment.
How surge protection device works?
Surge protective devices remain passive until a line voltage exceeds the turn on voltage of the SPD’s internal components, as shown in Figure 1. When that occurs, SPD components become conductive and shunt excess current away from the line, typically to a grounding conductor, as shown in Figure 2. The remaining Let-Through Voltage passes downstream along the circuit. These transient overvoltage events occur over fractions of a cycle, thus lasting only for microseconds.
