Product Description:

Stripping columns are critical pressure vessels used in distillation and separation processes across industries such as oil & gas, petrochemicals, and chemical processing. Their manufacturing involves stringent design, material selection, fabrication, and testing to ensure safety and efficiency under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions.

 

Product  Design :

 

Before manufacturing, detailed engineering is performed, including:

 

Process Design: Determines column diameter, height, tray/packing type, and operating conditions (pressure, temperature, flow rates).

 

Mechanical Design: Follows ASME BPVC Section VIII (Pressure Vessels) or other standards (PED, API, etc.).

 

Shell thickness calculations

 

Nozzle and support design

 

Stress analysis (FEA if required)

 

Material Selection: Based on corrosion resistance, temperature, and pressure. Common materials:

 

Carbon steel (SA-516 Gr. 70) for non-corrosive services

 

Stainless steel (SA-240 Type 304/316) for corrosive environments

 

Alloy steels (SA-387 Gr. 11/22) for high-temperature hydrogen service

 

Fabrication Process:

 

A. Shell & Head Manufacturing

 

Plate Cutting & Rolling:

 

Steel plates are cut (plasma/waterjet) and rolled into cylindrical shells.

 

Heads (dished ends) are formed via hot/cold pressing.

 

Welding (Longitudinal & Circumferential Seams):

 

Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) or Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) for thick sections.

 

Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) to relieve stresses.

 

Nozzle & Manway Attachment:

 

Reinforced openings for inlets, outlets, and inspection ports.

 

B. Internal Components (Trays/Packing Support)

 

Tray Columns:

 

Sieve, valve, or bubble-cap trays are fabricated and installed.

 

Downcomers and weirs are precision-aligned.

 

Packed Columns:

 

Structured or random packing (metal/ceramic/plastic).

 

Liquid distributors and support grids installed.

 

C. Assembly & Final Welding

 

Shell sections are joined with circumferential welds.

 

Internals are installed, and supports are welded.

 

Lining/cladding applied if needed (for corrosion resistance).

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT):

 

Radiography (RT) or Ultrasonic Testing (UT) for weld integrity.

 

Dye Penetrant (PT) or Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) for surface defects.

 

Hydrostatic/Pneumatic Testing:

 

Pressurized with water (hydro) or air (pneumatic) to verify strength.

 

Dimensional & Alignment Checks:

 

Ensures trays/packing are correctly positioned.

 

 

Surface Treatment & Coating

 

Sandblasting (SA 2.5) for surface cleaning.

 

Painting/Coating:

 

Epoxy coatings for corrosion protection.
