Camshaft position sensors are an essential component of the engine management system in modern cars. They are typically located near the camshaft and use various mechanisms to detect the position and rotational speed of the camshaft. The most common types of camshaft position sensors include:
Hall-effect sensors - These use a magnet and a Hall-effect sensor to detect the position of a toothed wheel on the camshaft. As the wheel rotates, the magnet passes by the sensor, creating a small voltage that is transmitted to the engine control module (ECM).
Optical sensors - These use an LED and a photodiode to detect the position of the camshaft. As the camshaft rotates, it passes by a slotted disc that interrupts the light beam from the LED, creating a voltage signal that is sent to the ECM.
