Submission of Requirements: The client provides the part's 3D CAD model (e.g., STP or IGES files) and 2D technical drawings. The drawings must detail dimensional tolerances, surface roughness, material specifications, and the required anodizing type (e.g., standard or hardcoat) and color.
Design for Manufacturability (DFM) Analysis: The engineering team evaluates the design's feasibility, with a specific focus on both milling and anodizing. They check if the geometry is suitable for CNC milling and assess if any deep holes, sharp angles, or complex internal cavities might affect the uniformity of the anodized layer.
Alloy Matching: For anodizing, alloys like 6061, 6063, or 7075 are typically chosen because they produce high-quality anodized layers. The team will recommend the most suitable material based on the part's strength requirements and the desired anodizing finish.
Quality Assurance: Materials are sourced from reliable suppliers and come with a material certificate to ensure compliance with standards, which is the foundation for subsequent processing.
Programming and Setup: A professional CAM programmer converts the CAD model into the G-code that the CNC machine can execute. The machine is set up with the correct tools and cutting parameters to ensure the part's dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
Milling Operation: The raw material is processed on a CNC milling machine through operations like milling, drilling, and tapping to create the required geometry. The process is closely monitored to prevent burrs and oil residue, which are crucial for preparing the surface for anodizing.
Cleaning and Degreasing: This is the most critical step before anodizing. The parts undergo multiple chemical cleaning procedures to completely remove cutting fluid, grease, and fingerprints from the surface, ensuring the anodized layer can adhere uniformly.
Anodizing Process:
Electrolysis: The part is submerged in a specific electrolyte solution (e.g., sulfuric acid) and an electric current is applied to form a porous oxide film on the aluminum surface.
Coloring (Optional): If a specific color is required, the part is immersed in an organic dye after the oxidation process, allowing the porous layer to absorb the color.
Sealing: Finally, the part undergoes a sealing treatment in hot water or a special solution to close the pores, which enhances corrosion and wear resistance.
Hard Anodizing (Type III): For industrial parts that require extremely high wear resistance, Hard Anodizing is used, which produces a thicker, harder oxide layer.
Dimensions and Tolerances: Precision equipment such as calipers and Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) are used to re-measure the part's dimensions, ensuring the anodized layer does not cause it to be out of tolerance.
Surface Quality Inspection: Specialized tools like anodizing thickness gauges and colorimeters are used to check the layer thickness, color uniformity, and wear resistance to ensure they meet the client's specifications.
Protective Packaging: Parts are individually or collectively packaged using bubble wrap, foam, or custom trays to protect the anodized layer from scratches or collisions during shipping.
On-Time Delivery: The products are delivered on schedule to meet the client's production timeline.
(1)6061: Good strength and machinability, widely used in structural parts
(2)6063: Excellent surface finish, suitable for anodizing and decorative components
(3)7075: High strength, used in aerospace, defense, and precision equipment
(4)5052: Strong corrosion resistance, suitable for housings and enclosures
(1)304: General-purpose stainless steel with good strength and corrosion resistance.
(2)316: Superior corrosion resistance, ideal for harsh environments
Note: Stainless steel cannot be anodized; instead, it is treated by polishing, passivation, or plating
Lightweight, high strength, excellent for aerospace and medical applications
Can be anodized to create colorful oxide surface layers
Excellent electrical and thermal conductivity
Commonly used for electrical contacts and heat dissipation parts
Surface treatments include plating or anti-oxidation coating (not anodizing)
Good machinability, corrosion resistance, and aesthetic appearance
Often used for decorative, plumbing, and electrical parts
Typically finished with plating or coating rather than anodizing
Advanced 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis CNC milling machines ensure high precision and complex part production.
In-house anodizing services with multiple color options, plus alternative finishes such as powder coating, plating, and polishing.
