Inspection: Incoming paperboard undergoes sampling checks for basis weight, thickness, flatness, color, and environmental compliance.
Slitting: Large paperboard rolls or sheets are precisely cut to required widths or specific sizes using high-speed slitting machines.
Scratching Core Formation (Coiling):
Coiling: Pre-cut paperboard strips are fed into automatic coiling machines.
Core Production: Machines tightly and uniformly coil the strips onto mandrels of set diameters. Critical controls include:
Tension control: Ensures tight, secure coiling without looseness or deformation.
Layer control: Precisely manages the number of layers for designed thickness and density.
Adhesive application: Applies eco-friendly, high-strength adhesive (e.g., PVA white glue or hot melt adhesive) automatically and evenly during coiling (typically on the inner side or between specific layers). This is crucial for structural integrity.
Shape forming: Produces cores in various shapes (cylindrical, conical, square, wave-shaped).
Core Curing & Stabilization:
Pressing/Molding: Some processes apply brief pressure or use molding fixtures after coiling for initial bonding and shape stability.
Curing: Cores are moved to designated areas for full curing. Duration depends on adhesive type and environment (temp/humidity), ensuring maximum bond strength. Well-ventilated curing zones are essential.
Cutting & Finishing:
Length Cutting: Cured long cores are precisely cut to final lengths (e.g., for posts) or specific shapes (e.g., for cat house components) using automatic cutting machines (circular saws, band saws, or laser cutters).
Chamfering/Sanding (Optional): Cutting edges may be slightly chamfered or sanded to remove burrs, enhancing safety and appearance.
Component Fabrication & Assembly (If Applicable):
Base/Tray Production: For scratchers with bases, materials like cardboard, particleboard, or corrugated board are cut, die-cut, creased, folded, and glued.
